This work picks up the autobiographical cartoon character created in the early 1990s — a reaction to Tom of Finland, inspired by the Venetian Pietro Longhi, and created against the omnipresent fear of AIDS. It is driven by a desire to be loved and not offend, to confess, to bear witness, and to be happily gay. Cartoons don’t get hurt.

“Postcards from the Edge is an annual benefit sale and exhibition by Visual AIDS. For almost 30 years, Postcards From the Edge offers a unique opportunity for buyers to acquire original, postcard-sized artwork for 100 dollars each. It’s a fun way of bringing a community of artists from across the globe together to support artists living with HIV and the legacies of those lost to AIDS.”

My work with Color-Aid papers began in the early 1990s alongside my graphite drawings. The work then was highly obsessive. I was fascinated by the limitations and possibilities of these commercial papers, particularly in how I could create gradient effects and ombres. The feeling of construction, even with color is a thread that connect directly to my recent sculpture . There is a Color-Aid piece featured in the Louis Comfort Tiffany Catalog for the year I was a grant winner in 1995. A small body of landscape collages were some of the last work from that period that were exhibited and sold. The older work can be found elsewhere on this site.

Coming out of the past few year working on sculptures where the process is very much one step in front of the other, I wanted to start drawing with a simple goal to capture in ink what was in front of me at the moment. This do-or-die approach where you work with the mistakes and keep going is what I am interested in. These moments of drawing help me be present. The style not a fully realized style and some are more done than others. Getting into a daily practice with these is what matters while I maintain work on other disciplines.

I had made a quick drawing of a vase of Trader Joe’s gladiolus on April 18. I returned to it the next day and decided zoom in and do a few drawings. What amazed me was that over a few hours the flowers kept opening up, so I kept drawing. Each drawing was capturing just a fleeting moment. Yes so Monet, but I was happy that I got to share that with the gladiolus.

This quick and present process began with self portraits in a small mirror. It was not just capturing resembles but the opportunity to map a terrain lines: wrinkles, hair, features. Being a bit rough appealed to me, the opposite of thr smooth untroubled image of my carton alter ego. I quickly realized similar opportunity for this quick drawing approach all over.

These are a series of 9 quick ink sketches in reverse order while having a few vodka shots. It is amusing to see how I came back to the naturalism of the first take with more confidence.
